I watched the Broadway show The Lion King on Wednesday, November 23 in New York. The average ticket price was 250–300 dollars. The duration of the musical was 2 hours and 30 minutes, with one 15-minute intermission. Everybody likes the cartoon on which the musical is based. However, the show was even more spectacular. It was very good in terms of music, scenery, and performers. The Lion King seems to be one of the best performances of recent years. It is very successful because only professional actors play animals surrounded by stunning scenery and music. The audience is happy to come to this show and enjoy watching the unforgettable story of little lion cub Simba. The paper will describe why this musical is very popular and present my opinion about it.
The musical The Lion King is based on the eponymous Disney cartoon. It is a story about a newborn lion cub named Simba and his journey as the heir to the throne. He wants to grow up and become like his father. However, Scar is willing to occupy the throne; therefore, he kills his brother. Simba gets lost in the desert, but wild boar Pumbaa and meerkat Timon find and save him. Simba grows up in the jungle leading a carefree life and at some point, he realizes that the time has come to take his place on the throne. To become the king, he should fight with Scar.
While waiting for the musical, people can visit a cafe with tasty snacks and drinks. They can also enjoy the view of New York. The musical The Lion King is really impressive as actors’ costumes and scenery are elaborate. The stage is transformed into the African savannah with many animals such as antelopes, lions, hyenas, giraffes, and others. The show is directed by Julie Taymor and music is created by Elton John. The cast changes very often. Adults play mature animals and children play little lion cubs. Some actors have only masks, while others hold figures of animals making the audience believe that elephants, tigers, lions, and giraffes move themselves. All members of the troupe are professionals, and their acting is amazing. The actors talk not very often, they just offer the audience a fascinating show. People should know the plot of the cartoon to better understand the show. Acting is accompanied by excellent actors’ voices and colorful costumes. The audience loves the atmosphere of the show because it reminds them of the cartoon they watched in childhood. However, in the musical, everything is more colorful and real. Those individuals who love Disney cartoons should watch this musical.
People can buy souvenirs, take pictures of actors, and get their autographs during the intermission. If they come just before the beginning of the show, there will be no tickets. If individuals buy tickets a few days before the musical, prices are usually higher than when they book tickets in advance. Playing, singing and movements of the actors are perfect. I especially liked the actor who played Simba. The Lion King is interesting for all age groups; therefore, people can come with their families or friends, and no one will be disappointed.
